I have appreciated the nice comments, the support and compliments I have heard and received about our staff. I am very appreciative of the efforts they have put forth in attempts to try to reach kids and communicate with them. It’s been fun to see some of the kids out walking or saying “Hi” to them on one of my kid’s Zoom meetings. I meet with every one of my teachers each week and I hear good things from them about what is happening at their student’s home. Thank you! The school board met this past week and one of the topics of conversation was what will happen on April 30th? April 30th is the day the governor has designated that in-person education could possibly resume. There have been several schools on the front range that will not resume in-person education and will continue with Distance Learning. Montrose county schools will continue with Distance Learning for the remainder of the year. Our school board is waiting to receive further direction from our governor. We will keep you posted on further developments. I would like to say “thank you” to the Friends Church from Paonia on the cards they sent out to our staff, thanking them for all they do for our students. It was a wonderful gesture and very kind of them. Thank you to Kerry Smith for helping organize this event. The school closure has been in effect for 3 weeks now, and I miss working with all the students and our outstanding team of teachers and staff at HK8. I wanted to update everyone what school counselor services will look like during the school closure, so I can continue to support students and their families whenever possible, to the best of my ability. I will be providing weekly optional guidance lessons, counseling activities for all the elementary students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. They will be found in the packets that go home on Mondays, and they don’t need to be returned to school. Some of the topics will include: back to bucket filling/ kindness at home, emotion/ stress management, conflict resolution, coping with change, cooperation/ working together, the love of the outdoors, and transitions. I will also be providing weekly optional activities for middle school students in 7th and 8th grade. They are called ICAP activities, which stands for Individualized Career and Academic Plan. We have a computer based program called Naviance where students have their own account to start to think about the world of work, college and career readiness. Some of the ICAP topics include, career pathways, ways to pay for college, preparing for high school, study skills and the love of the outdoors. All optional activities, lessons will begin the week of April 13, 2020. I thought it was important to let the students, their families get comfortable with the online, distance learning model before my optional lessons/ activities would begin. During the school closure I will be working remotely from home and there are a couple ways HK8’s families can reach out to me for assistance. They can email me directly at: keith.trumbull@deltaschools.com, call HK8 school at (970)872-3325 during the times listed,(Mondays 8-4pm; Tuesday- Friday 10-2pm). The office staff will provide you with my google phone number that has a confidential voicemail, or setup a virtual meeting with myself via google hangouts. I will continue to facilitate skills groups, set up weekly counseling sessions with students via the phone or google hangouts, and help coordinate community resources.
